Rick Wells Trophy Triathlon 2017

Black Sands Triathlon Club, in association with Sport Auckland and Triathlon New Zealand are excited to announce the second Rick Wells Trophy Triathlon. The race is supported by a 5 week programme being provided by Black Sands Triathlon Club with the amazing support of Sport Auckland. TriKids and Avantiplus Westgate.

Course familiarisation and fun training experiences

On Race Day our transition area will be open from 11.15.  The first race briefing begins at 11.45 with the first race starting at 12.00.

In schools Programme

Triathlon Experience and Have a Go!

Every year 5 and 6 pupil in the participating Schools in the central city are being provided with the following Tri Kids Programme delivery by Black Sands Triathlon Club.

  • Introduction to the sport of triathlon.

  • Have a go experience - including transition skills, bike skills and fun running drills.

  • A mini triathlon event - including a waterslide and a race with their peers.

In addition to the in-school training sessions, 4 on-site training sessions are being provided by the team. These sessions are designed to help participants gain confidence and knowledge of the course - to ensure they have a great experience on race day.
These sessions will be conducted as follows:

Wednesday 18th October, Coyle Park, 6.15pm
  • Game 1 - Bike

  • Game 2 - Bike to Run

  • Game 3 - Swim

  • Game 4 - Swim to Bike 

Wednesday 25th October, Coyle Park, 6.15pm
  • Course walk through.

  • Transition 1 and Transition 2 drills and skills.

  • Run drills and skills.

Wednesday 1st November, Coyle Park, 6.15pm
  • Swim skills and drills.

  • Run drills and skills.

  • Course walk through.

Special Coached sessions - selected students
Wednesday 8th November, Coyle Park, 6.15pm

As a result of the above delivery, a number of children per school have been selected to participate in the Rick Wells Trophy where they will represent their school in a competitive race. The additional training sessions are being provided to introduce the children to more advanced skills and some strategies for them to enjoy the Rick Wells race. These sessions include:

  • Advanced transition skills.

  • Advanced run drills.

  • Race planning exercise.
