Rotorua half Iron Man is speculated as one of the countries hardest races at this distance. Its no-nonsense approach towards triathlon really makes it a popular and different experience to race day. Transition is a few racks or if you're there late, a spot on the ground, the medal is a bottle opener and the winners get cuddly toys! Get rid of all the unnecessary red tape and trimmings and go out there and suffer.
Our club usually have a healthy presence at this event and this year was no different. 11 club members took part in one of the many events on offer and enjoyed the after event entertainment after having a beer put in your hands at the finish line.
In the Quarter Iron Man we had Bryan, Lesa and Regan competing. Bryan completed the tough course in 3:21:50. Regan managed 15th overall in 2:35:58 which was a great result bouncing back after a bit of time off training. Lesa Davidson, the Black Sands golden girl only managed a 2:34:58 earning her 1st in her Age Group and 3rd woman across the line. We have stipulated to Lesa that we expect better from her in future and that we are considering revoking her membership.
Competing in the Aquabike was the dynamic duo Sandi & Claudine. The ladies finished in 3:57:57 and 4:16:12 respectively - a very well done, but just remember this is Triathlon, as in 3, not 2 sports. Furthermore don't even try and pull the "We're injured" card, because it just doesn't wash with us.
Competing in the main event was a whole cast of Black Sands members. Ben, Marc and Andrew stuck pretty tight for a lot of the race, not illegally tight, but just tight enough. Fresh from Taupo last week Ben took the win with a time of 4:58:07, 20th overall and 8th in his Age Group. Awesome work Benedict. Marc was hot on his heels finishing at 5:00:18, 4th in his Age Group by only 13 seconds. Remember that next time you think transitions in such a long race aren't important. Leticia also found herself just short of the podium with 4th in her Age Group finishing in 5:47:42. Andrew chose this race to take his new ride out on it's maiden voyage and crossed the line in 5:14:23 putting him 7th in his Age Group.
Last, but by no means least, Lee O and Mike B finished the half in 5:42:41 and 6:02:54 respectively. Lee O commented "Such a great race with a great bunch of people, but I think the real winner here today is Triathlon".
Also a special shout out to Verna Cook-Jackson supporting from the sidelines, always great to see you!
